Finally, the world cup is here, and the main stage of the tournament is bound to get going from October 22 when the hosts Australia lock horns with New Zealand. Australia emerged as champions in the previous edition and in the next ICC T20 world cup; the performance is expected to be of the top rank. Till a few years back the general perception of T-20 cricket was that it was more geared toward the batsman and how the bowlers end up competing in them. There was a general feeling that it was all over for the bowlers.
But trust me, the opposite has gone on to happen. It is the spinners, along with the fast bowlers, who have gone on to take their planning along with execution to a new level, coupled with a new level of excitement. Below are a few bowlers who are expected to make a mark in this present edition of the world cup, and let us evaluate them.
Alzarri Joseph from West Indies
Though he is a household name, he is still expected to be one of the bowlers to watch out for in this tournament edition. His consistency and pace were a real delight during the recent series against Australia. He went on to capture 5 for 38 in a couple of games against them. In both games, he had an economy rate of less than 5 which may cause frustration for the batsmen. Though his team is expected to dominate the group stage, it has not been the case in the present situation as they have lost their first game to Scotland. He is certainly expected to be one of the bowlers to watch out for in this edition of the tournament.
Haris Rauf from Pakistan
He is a hero from the BBL, and his pace of 150 km/hr is bound to be a real concern for the batsman. With his ability to get wickets, he is expected to play a key role in ensuring a smooth passage for Pakistan to the final stages of the tournament. Among all the current Pakistan bowlers he has gone on to capture the greatest number of wickets in the last year. Should Pakistan reach, the semi-final stages do expect a few performances to spring up a notch higher. His accuracy is a real asset, and in the recent tri-series that Pakistan won in New Zealand, he had a major role to play. One thing is for sure when heading into the tournament he happens to be a great value bet.
Wanindu Hasaranga from Sri Lanka
He is one of the in-form bowlers, and his skills were exceptional when Sri Lanka went on to win the Asia cup last month. In the last world cup held in UAE, he was the top wicket-taker and had 16 scalps to his credit. He was the man of the tournament in the latest edition of the Asia cup. Currently, he is among the top 5 bowlers in T-20 cricket and his performance is a precise indicator of that.
Adam Zampa from Australia
The long locks and the hairband make him one of the crowd favorites. Though it has to be said that his performance has gone on to back up the stage. In the last edition of the world cup, he was only second to Hasaranga in terms of wickets. He went on to take 13 wickets with the economy rate being in the range of 5.81. Another added advantage of him is that he has the ability to run through his overs quickly and his agility is bound to frustrate the batsman. He happens to be one of the leading wicket-takers in this edition of the world cup. The value of the team is of utmost importance and the chances of Australia would depend on how the spinner goes on to perform.
Josh Hazelwood from Australia
His average among the current crop of T-20 bowlers ranks among the best. His performances in the last edition of the world cup tournament ensured that the world took notice of him. Though he was a test bowler his outstanding performances in T-20 cricket did go on to attract a lot of attention in the last few months. One thing is for sure he ranks to be among the most consistent bowlers in T-20 cricket and his performance is right up there when it comes to the world. He is known to put the ball in the right spot and happens to be the go-through bowler that Australia goes on to rely on. More so when there are big overs in a tournament like this. One thing is for sure his immaculate length is going to trouble the batsman.
Rashid Khan from Afghanistan
One of the most entertaining bowlers in T-20 cricket and he is a sought commodity in the various T-20 leagues all around the world. He happens to be such an entertainer in this world that his aero-plane form of celebration has gone on to grab the attention of the players. The only drawback is that he is playing for a team like Afghanistan, otherwise, his performances would have been a notch higher when it comes to the top-playing nations of the world. Another interesting feature is that he is known to be a proven performer in Australia and he is aware on how to get the perfect bounce.
Trent Boult from New Zealand
He is ranked to be among the top strike bowlers in the last few years. In fact, he ranks among the top 3 bowlers who are currently playing international cricket for New Zealand. His ability is able to bowl at the beginning and at the end. One thing is for sure he is rated to be among the best opening bowlers of the competition and in the last world cup all of us saw what he was capable of doing. His form though has been patchy.
